2004 Wado Academy Championships Report
The Wado-Ryu Karate-Do Association competition
squad traveled to Reading on 2nd October to compete in the National Wado-Ryu Karate
Championships, and came away with an impressive spread of trophies.
Adam Flint (pictured right, with Natasha Johansen) from Up Hatherley, Cheltenham, came second in the adult kata event in a very close final that had to be decided by a tie-breaker.
Flint, who won the event last year, said afterwards "This was one of the toughest competitions I have entered. The training was very intense,
with many late night and early morning sessions, but it was worth it at the end of the day. I can also confirm that the trophy can hold exactly
one third of a bottle of Champagne!"
Other club successes were Natasha Johansen from Cam, Dursley, who came second in the 12-14 years children's kata event. Natasha was in the lead
all the way until the final round, but was just nudged into second place. Natasha's parents, both students of the karate club, were very
pleased with their daughter's efforts. Ben Nichols (pictured left, with
Sensei Nick Quilliam) from Rodborough, put on an excellent performance coming second in the 12-14 years male
children's kumite. He show good, controlled technique and point scoring, and narrowly lost out in the final.
Sensei Nick Quilliam, 6th Dan, the Association's chief instructor, commented "I am very pleased with the efforts of all of the competitors
from our club that entered the tournament. It is a testiment to their dedication and training that they got as far as they did, including
those that didn't quite make it into medal positions. Well done to all."
